בפרק זה של הפודקאסט עו"ד תמיר דורטל מארח את ההיסטוריון פרופסור אהוד מנור לשיחה על שנותיה הראשונות והדרמטיות של מדינת ישראל, החל מתום מלחמת העצמאות והסכמי רודוס ב-1949, ועד לנקודת הרתיחה של פרוץ מלחמת ששת הימים בשנת 1967. 
במהלך הראיון, השניים צוללים לתוך תקופה שאותה מגדיר מנור כעשור של "בין בנייה לבלימה". מצד אחד, מדינת ישראל הצעירה הייתה שקועה במאמץ אדיר של קליטת המוני עולים, הקמת מאות יישובים חדשים ופיתוח תשתיות לאומיות ענקיות כמו המוביל הארצי. מצד שני, היא נאלצה להתמודד עם ניסיונות בלתי פוסקים מצד מדינות ערב לבלום את התפתחותה, החל מחרם כלכלי ודיפלומטי, ועד לפעולות טרור רצחניות של מסתנני הפדאיון בגבולות.
השיחה מנתחת את מדיניות החוץ והביטחון של ממשלות מפא"י ההיסטוריות, תוך התמקדות בדילמות הרות הגורל שעמדו לפתחם של מנהיגי האומה דאז. מדוע החליט ראש הממשלה דוד בן גוריון להורות על נסיגה חד-צדדית מסיני לאחר ההצלחה הצבאית הכבירה של מבצע קדש? כיצד תפסו אישים כמו יגאל אלון, שמעון פרס ומשה דיין את סוגיית "הביטחון היסודי" של ישראל? ומדוע התגלע ויכוח כה עז בין פיתוח יכולות גרעיניות כגורם הרתעה, לבין הצורך בהתיישבות ככלי ליצירת עומק אסטרטגי ממשי?
